Heritage Open Day 2009

As you will know, the Civic Trust, in partnership with English Heritage encourages places/buildings etc to open in the middle of September each year. In 2007, Church Cottage and All Saints Church were open and made a very interesting visit. We have decided to do our bit in 2009.

On Sunday 13th September we will ‘open’ the old cemetery at South View (the Holy Ghost Cemetery). We will have tours of the site, explanations of the Grade II* chapel ruins, of the Sandys tombs and the emblems on the tower. We will also have tours of the WW1 Commonwealth War Graves headstones, with the stories behind them and of Victoria Cross holder, Aidan Liddell, who is buried here. We will have a tent with an exhibition and activities for children as well as a tour of the monuments of the Basingstokers of the 19th century, who played their part in the history of our town. So we need your help. We will need lots of people to help on the day with stewarding and other activities. This will be a fun day and a great opportunity to get to know this corner of old Basingstoke, just 5 minutes from Festival Place.

So please do let us know if you would like to help. It’s a long way off we know, but it would be great to have some names and contact details at this point. Phone Debbie on 473390 or e mail reavell@btinternet.com or send your name and phone number to 25 Cromwell Road, Basingstoke RG21 5NR and we’ll get back to you.

John May stone

You remember the John May stone in the last newsletter? Robert Brown remembers this stone being on the Masonic Hall, next to the Drill Hall, so it was probably strictly speaking the foundation stone of that building.

* * * MEMBERS' ASSISTANCE INVITED * * *

On your behalf your Committee is looking to present a framed display to The Willis Museum [when re-opened!] about "Horse racing on Basingstoke Down".

Our research has so far covered Baigent & Millard's History of Basingstoke, Challoner Chute's History of The Vyne, Victoria County History, The County Magazine, Jane Austen's letters, "Free Rein: Racing in Berkshire and Beyond", a silver trophy won at the races and now in the V & A, and a map of the course in the 18thC [and various dead ends].

The information so gleaned is limited and we would welcome members' input. Of particular interest would be information about the effect of the 1786 Act enclosing the Down; seemingly, this would have resulted in the cessation of racing there with Hackwood Park becoming the venue until1850 after which no race meetings are recorded but . . . Colin Williams would welcome your assistance: candmwilliams@hotmail.com or Basingstoke 324800.

A big thank you to all our members who have renewed their subscription promptly – this is such a help to our busy membership secretary. If you have not re-joined yet, then please do. We need your membership; it adds strength to our voice.

Other Matters

=> AGM 7 May at the Willis. 7.30. - Old images of the town from Hampshire’s collection.

=> February Meeting - was cancelled because of bad weather.

=> Lemon Land - we submitted comments in line with those in our July newsletter.

=> Bench near The Bounty - this artist-designed bench with tiles is in need of some refurbishment. We are asking the council to do this.

=> McCarthy and Stone - we objected to this development in Southern Road as proposed and note that it has been refused consent.

=> Tree Preservation Orders - there was concern that these are being done away with, but they are under review. Many date from 40 years ago and often the tree in question has died.

=> Friends of Loddon Vale - this new conservation group will look after parks on the line of the Loddon – George V playing field, Victory Park and Glebe Gardens – contact Christine Aymes if you would like to get involved. christineaymes@hotmail.co.uk or phone 07780600758.

All members are welcome to attend meetings of the society.

At most meetings we consider planning applications which fall within the area of concern to the society and agree comments.

Next meetings - March 5 and April 2 at Queen Mary’s College (go in at the main entrance and reception will guide you to the room) at 7.30.
